Incident Description:
On October 6, 2023, Rosenheim24 reported a fire at a wood processing facility in Mariaberg, Germany.
At approximately 7:00 a.m. on October 5, thick smoke was spotted emanating from an industrial facility. Subsequent investigation confirmed the presence of a fire within a silo tower, which was loaded with over 200 cubic metres of material. The drone unit from the Landshut district conducted an aerial survey of the site.
However, upon arrival, the firefighting team encountered challenges in tackling the flames. Initially, a breathing apparatus-equipped firetruck was summoned to the scene. An attempt was then made to empty the silo using a suction fan. Later in the afternoon, a suction excavator arrived to take over this task.
Unfortunately, the situation did not improve significantly on-site, as the advanced stage of the fire rendered the excavator ineffective. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, were compelled to manually empty the silo. Additional reinforcements were also called in as the operation unfolded.
The technical advisor from the Ergolding Technical Relief Agency was brought in to assess the situation, subsequently requesting more personnel. The operation eventually progressed with simultaneous emptying of the silo from two different points. The persistent flare-ups of the fire made the task more complicated.
Two firefighters sustained injuries while combating the fire but were released after receiving outpatient treatment.
