Company Description:
According to the company’s website, Midwest Grain & Barge Company is the only locally owned and operated river terminal in the Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois area. It opened for business in 1998 and includes two 950-bushel dump pits, a 36-inch wide, 400-foot long conveyor system, two 45,000 bushel hopper bottom bins and a 120,000 bushel bin.
Incident Description:
On November 19, 2019, KFVS 12 reported a grain bin fire at a grain processing and handling facility in Scott City, Missouri.
By the time the Scott City and Cape Girardeau fire departments arrived, smoke and flames were issuing from the bin, which contained a residual soybean crop.
According to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department, maintenance crews were in the process of cutting the grain bin when sparks dropped inside and ignited what was left of a soybean crop. Firefighters had to flood the bin with water to extinguish the flames.
No one was injured. Firefighters were able to clear the scene at around 8:00 p.m.
