Dust Hazard Analysis
Combustible dust explosions represent a significant hazard that can exist without anyone being aware of the presence of dangerous dust levels. Performing a Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) can give you peace of mind by fully evaluating the threat to your facility based on compliance with the intent of applicable national codes and standards. More importantly, we can ensure that combustible dust hazards are appropriately identified with a plan in place to support mitigation.
Are you in compliance? BakerRisk participates in industry committees and forums dedicated to proactively identify industry needs and develop innovative approaches to address dust hazards.
Our experts can perform the following services to evaluate your hazards and ensure compliance:
- NFPA 652 Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA): NFPA 652 requires that a DHA be performed for industrial sites using or producing combustible dusts.
- Industry Specific NFPA Standard Compliance Audit: Audit a facility against the prescriptive elements of applicable industry-specific NFPA standard (i.e., NFPA 61, NFPA 484, NFPA 654, NFPA 655, or NFPA 664) and provide consulting advice on the approaches needed to meet the standard’s requirements (i.e., housekeeping, choice and design of dust collection and explosion protection systems, etc.). These audits would normally be performed as part of a DHA.
- Performance-Based DHA: Through performance-based (risk) assessment, determine the necessity of implementing safeguards to meet corporate risk tolerance criteria and provide risk-ranking of compliance gaps to cost effectively maximize risk reduction. BakerRisk employs What-IF/HAZOP/LOPAor other similar approaches developed through our application of established PSM related work practices to provide maximum benefit to our clients.
- Incident Investigation: Assist with gathering complete, accurate, and objective incident data to perform a cause and origin investigation, and provide litigation support as needed. (See our Incident Investigations service pagefor additional details).
- Combustible Dust Explosibility Testing: Facilitate testing of the explosibility characteristics of particulate material and provide recommendations on which combustible dust tests to conduct, how to interpret test results, and what the results mean to the facility owner.
