According to its website, Yermarus Thermal Power Station is a coal-powered thermal power plant in Yermarus village in Karnataka, India. Owned by the Karnataka Power Corporation, it was commissioned in 2015 and is India’s first 800MW supercritical thermal power plant.
Incident Description:
On May 25, 2020, the Deccan Herald reported a fire at a coal-powered thermal power plant in Yermarus village in Karnataka, India.
A conveyor belt carrying coal ignited and plant employees were unable to get it until control before the flames destroyed the belt. The article stated that fires mishaps were “common” at thermal power plants during the summer.
No injuries were reported. Management set up an alternative conveyor belt to ensure that there would be no power interruption.
