Incident Description:
On August 6, 2019, the Daily Hive reported an apparent dust explosion on a bulk cargo carrier that was sailing out of Vancouver Harbor in Vancouver, British Columbia. Social media users in the area also reported a loud explosion, followed by a large column of white smoke billowing from the vessel.
The incident is believed to have been caused by an explosion of the hold, with a hatch blowing open to vent the pressure. These bulk carriers usually carry large quantities of grain, coal, and other particle cargo that are prone to dust explosions when the particles suspended in air rapidly combust in an enclosed space.
No injuries have been reported.
