Incident Description:
On July 29, 2019, the World Socialist Website reported a July 23 fire at a metal casting plant in Saginaw, Michigan.
The fire broke out before 1:00 a.m. when molten aluminum contacted flammable material in the exhaust duct of a casting machine. The flames reached the outside of the structure and collapsed other ductwork before firefighters were able to contain it with assistance from plant employees.
The Battalion Chief said that the fire stayed primarily in the ductwork, which made it easier for the on-site fire battalion and brigade to contain it. At one point, the sprinkler system came on and off, which helped dampen burning embers.
No injuries were reported and the plant was able to resume operations the next day.
