According to the company website, Cardinal Ethanol was founded in 2008 in Union City, Indiana. The plant, which is powered by natural gas, is designed to produce 100 million gallons of ethanol each year. It processes an estimated 36,000,000 bushels of corn annually. Other output includes 340,000 tons of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), which is a co-product of ethanol production.
Incident Description:
On November 6, 2018, local news resource the Daily Advocate reported a silo explosion at an ethanol plant outside of Union City, Indiana. Smoke curling from the top of the silo could be seen from the roadway, along with structural damage.
The company was reported to have had issues with the same silo, which was the site of at least two fires in recent weeks.
No injuries were reported and any fire damage was contained to the interior of the silo. The incident remains under investigation by the Union City Fire Department.
