Incident Description:
On October 26, 2023, the Marshall Independent reported a fire at a woodworking shop in Marshall, Minnesota.
At around noon, the Marshall Fire Department was alerted to a fire in a barn situated at the intersection of East Lyon Street and E Street in Marshall. The barn, used by the property owner as a woodworking shop and for wood storage, caught fire due to a hot ember igniting a dust collector in the shop.
According to fire officials, the flames extended slightly into the barn’s rafters but were primarily confined to the area where the fire originated. The lean-to structure on the east side of the barn, where the fire started, sustained the most damage.
In a collaborative effort, the Marshall Fire Department received support from the Ghent and Cottonwood Fire Departments. Additional assistance came from North Memorial Ambulance and the Marshall Police Department. The extra manpower from Ghent and Cottonwood was instrumental in allowing for rotation among the Marshall firefighters at the scene.
The fire’s proximity to the city presented a unique set of challenges for the responding teams. Unlike typical barn fires that occur outside city limits and face water supply issues, this incident was close to city hydrants, allowing firefighters to quickly control the blaze.
However, the unfamiliar layout of the barn posed difficulties in locating and accessing the fire. Firefighters relied on the homeowner and his family for guidance on opening up the structure to effectively tackle the fire.
The firefighting teams remained at the scene for approximately three hours, ensuring the fire was completely extinguished and the area secured.
No injuries were reported.
