Incident Description:
On October 12, 2023, NAU reported a fire at a sunflower seed facility in Satigny, Switzerland.
The fire originally originated in a grain dryer late in the morning before spreading to the adjacent silo, resulting in the burning of approximately six tons of sunflower seeds. Due to the elevated risk of an explosion, the fire department deployed a substantial response team to the scene.
A total of 60 professional and volunteer firefighters, equipped with ten fire engines, were actively engaged in managing the situation. Two handheld lances and two cannon lances were used. Given the silo’s proximity to railway tracks, the SBB fire engine was also brought into action.
The primary objective was to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring silos, and by the afternoon, the situation was brought under control. It was planned to maintain a significant emergency service presence on-site throughout the night.
No injuries were reported.
