Incident Description:
On September 29, 2023, Fire and Rescue NSW reported a fire at a grain facility in Condobolin, Australia.
The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. within a loader vehicle. FRNSW promptly dispatched eight firefighters, accompanied by two fire trucks, including experts in hazardous materials response. The NSW Rural Fire Service provided additional support.
Facing formidable flames impacting the silo, which held up to 4,000 tons of wheat, as well as the crop-loading system, twelve workers were safely evacuated, and a nearby train was relocated as a precaution.
To mitigate the risk of a dust explosion and limited visibility due to thick smoke, fire crews initially attacked the fire from outside the silo. After ventilating the structure, firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus entered through an open entrance to fully extinguish the fire, a task that took over five hours to complete.
No injuries were reported.
