Incident Description:
On July 21, 2023, The Daily News reported a fire at a paper products company in Longview, Washington.
Longview Fire Department members worked for three consecutive nights to extinguish the fire, which was reported at 6:40 p.m. on July 18. Helicopters deployed 2,500-gallon buckets of water and up to 45 fire personnel were on site. The responding agencies included various fire districts and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.
Plans were made to dismantle parts of the fire-damaged conveyor systems that transport wood chips to manufacturing buildings. This removal was necessary to prevent potential harm to workers below and to facilitate easier access to the smouldering piles.
A firefighter from Cowlitz County Fire District 3 showed symptoms of heat stress while fighting the fire. He was treated in an onsite ambulance and later at PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center before being discharged. No other injuries were reported.
