Incident Description:
On July 22, 2023, Fireworld.at reported a silo fire at an animal feed manufacturer in Neuss, Germany.
On July 21, 2023, the employees detected a burning odour and promptly alerted the fire brigade at 8:09 a.m. Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered an extensive smouldering fire in the outlet area of an animal feed silo.
In order to put out this fire, the silo had to be completely emptied. With the automated emptying system rendered inoperable, teams equipped with respiratory protection were forced to manually shovel out the silo’s contents. Throughout the operation, approximately 16 tons of burning feed was extracted from the silo via a small 20 x 30 cm inspection opening. During this process, it became apparent that an additional silo also exhibited signs of a fire, requiring it to be emptied as well.
The operation was intense and prolonged, lasting roughly 20 hours with a consistent presence of 20 to 30 emergency personnel on site. Finally, on the morning of July 22nd, the site was secured, and control was returned to the operator around 4:30 a.m.
No injuries were reported.
