Incident Description:
On May 2, 2023, Yahoo Japan reported that a fire in a biomass power plant in Sodegaura City, Japan, was finally under control.
The fire that had been ongoing for four months. On January 1, the city’s fire department received notification that a fire was originating from a wooden pallet containing wood chips near the outlet of a storage silo at the fuel relay station.
While the fire initially broke out in one of the four silos, another silo continued to emit white smoke, indicating smouldering. Nitrogen injection and water sprinkling were employed, but complete suppression was not achieved.
After emptying the contents of two silos and assessing the condition of the pellets as well as the gas concentration within the remaining two silos, it was determined that the fire had finally been extinguished.
A dedicated fire brigade, consisting of a commander and a rotating team of 3 to 4 individuals, worked tirelessly on a 24-hour basis, operating in 4-hour shifts.
No injuries were reported and the investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
