Description of Wood Dust Fire:
On July 26, 2018, the Courier-Herald reported a structural fire at a woodworking business in Sumner, Washington. The first fire teams to arrive found two 20’ x 20’ shop outbuildings ablaze with several exposures and compressed gas cylinders venting. The Sumner City Twitter account stated that as a safety precaution, Puyallup Street was temporarily closed.
The flames quickly spread across a dry patch of grass and reached an area containing pallets, dumpsters, and sawdust. Fire was also heading for a sawdust hopper and roof of the main building, but firefighters quickly contained it with help from Central Pierce Fire & Rescue and Valley Regional Fire Authority.
The outbuildings were destroyed but there were no injuries reported. The cause of the blaze is unknown but it is believed to have started in the mechanical shop of the business.
OSHA Inspections:
An establishment search showed three OSHA inspections for Pasquier Panel Products, but none were flagged for involving combustible dust.
