Company Description:
According to its website, Fieldale Farms Corporation is a poultry farmer headquartered in Baldwin, Georgia. The company operates three hatcheries, two slaughterhouses, a further processing plant, and two feed mills. It processed 16.3 million pounds of ready-to-cook chicken on a weekly basis in 2020, making it the 15th largest broiler producer in the United States.
Incident Description:
On November 30, 2021, Feed Strategy reported a silo fire at a poultry processing plant in Baldwin, Georgia.
Firefighters from multiple agencies responded at around 6:30 a.m.. Baldwin, Habersham, and Banks counties sent fire units to extinguish the fire, which occurred on November 26.
As the operation is just across the street from the Baldwin fire station, the reporting party walked to the station to notify them that there had been some charring on the top of a silo that contained soybeans.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but it was apparent that there had been some type of flash fire. It was finally extinguished by adding four tons of nitrogen to displace the oxygen.
There were no injuries associated with the fire.
Previous Incidents
On July 12, 2017, WATTPoultry reported an explosion at Fieldale Farms Corporation in Baldwin, Georgia. Firefighters across the street heard the blast and saw smoke coming from the top of the mill. One employee was taken to the hospital with first-degree burns to the face and second-degree burns to the arm.
