When the local fire department received a report of the fire at 2:33 a.m., it mobilized 17 vehicles and 35 firefighters. The fire was extinguished an hour later.
The Environmental Protection Bureau said that the fire was started by an explosion in one of the plant’s silos storing polypropylene pellets. The initial findings of the investigation suggested that static electricity caused the explosion.
