Incident Description:
On January 9, 2021, the Independent reported a grain silo fire at Ringaskiddy near the Port of Cork in Cork, Ireland.
The fire ignited shortly after 8:30 a.m., sending plumes of smoke that were visible across the port and up to four kilometres inland. Flames were also visible above the silo, which was part of a grain storage facility at the deepwater berth at Ringaskiddy. Local residents were advised to keep all doors and windows closed and remain indoors.
According to The Irish Times, a major emergency plan was activated by the port as firefighters arrived and battled the flames. This plan involved assessing whether the fire posed a risk to shipping and other activities in the terminal area.
Because the fire was so severe, firefighters took a defensive approach. They used an aerial platform to help fight the flames from a height before they managed to bring it under control at around 11:00 a.m. The facility was badly damaged.
Firefighters remained at the scene to monitor the situation but all ship operations in Ringaskiddy were suspended as a precaution.
No injuries were reported.
